For the Record: 'The deadliest of enemies'

‘The deadliest of enemies’ by James Phelps, pages 16 and 17, Sunday Telegraph, 19 July 2015

The main article is an extract from James Phelps’ forthcoming book, Australia’s Most Murderous Prison. The extract describes an alleged escape plan and says it was foiled because of an intercepted phone call from an inmate. An accompanying article on page 17, ‘Violence that will not just go away’, claims “A Corrective Services spokesman said the department had no comment on the incident.”

In fact, CSNSW denied the incident. Below is a copy of the statement sent to the newspaper the morning before publication.

CSNSW previously offered to help Mr Phelps with his book, which purports to be a history of Goulburn Correctional Centre, by providing him with a tour of the prison, interviews with staff, and fact checking. This offer, which was also made to his publisher, was not accepted.

Corrective Services NSW did not intercept any such phone call and is unaware of any evidence for the alleged plot.
