The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government today launched a new advertising campaign – ‘You’re Stronger Than You Think’ - to encourage problem gamblers to seek help to kick their habit.
Minister for Gaming Troy Grant said often problem gamblers can feel helpless when the damage starts to mount up in their lives. "The $1.5 million ‘You’re Stronger Than You Think’ campaign takes a positive, motivational approach, reminding people that they have recovered from setbacks in the past and can do so again," Mr Grant said.
"This campaign will promote courage, strength and respect to motivate people to seek help from the NSW Government’s range of free Gambling Help services as early as possible and overcome entrenched fears and stigma.
"The campaign also includes a powerful call to action video by
Ned Kelly and Two Hands director Gregor Jordan with music by Australian band Powderfinger.
"The central video and radio advertisements focus on character-forming life events including rising against opponents on the sporting field, winning a job, overcoming an injury, and coming through for loved ones - and how the same resolve can be used to face gambling addiction.
"We want this campaign to result in more problem gamblers and their families proactively taking up free and confidential services funded by the NSW Government.
"We also want the general community to have a more compassionate understanding of problem gambling and greater awareness of the counselling services available," Mr Grant said.
The You’re Stronger Than You Think campaign will also feature radio advertising and promotion through Triple M’s breakfast Grill Team including its host, former Penrith rugby league star, Mark Geyer, who will also help launch the campaign.
Former Parramatta league star Nathan Hindmarsh, a reformed problem gambler, will be among those lending support through campaign interviews and discussions. Triple M NRL commentator Anthony Maroon will also interview people affected by problem gambling during sports broadcasts.
Other measures include targeted online video and banner ads, regional radio advertising aired across NSW, popular sports site and blogs will run stories about problem gambling and campaign advertising will appear on venue-based ATM screens and receipts.
The campaign, funded through the NSW Government’s Responsible Gambling Fund will also involve community based promotion of Gambling Help counselling and services by phone, email, online by phoning 1800 858 858 or visiting
The campaign will run from now until the end of December and then resume from April through to the end of May 2015.
