People affected by the storms and heavy rains in NSW can get free legal help with questions about their insurance cover and claims.

NSW Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said insurance policies can be complex and tricky to understand but urged people to get legal advice.

“Getting legal advice early is critical for people whose home and property has been damaged by heavy rain and storm,” Ms Upton said.

“Anyone can get free legal advice by calling 1800 801 529 or contacting their local Legal Aid office.”

People affected by the heavy rain and storms should

  • Keep a record of flood damage - take photos and videos if possible
  • Check the wording of your insurance policy and, if in doubt, get legal advice before speaking to claims assessors; and
  • Make sure that premiums have been paid in full, or are up to date, because premium shortfalls may affect payment.
Legal Aid NSW will also set up additional legal advice services in affected areas in due course. For legal assistance with storms, rain and flooding please contact 1800 801 529 or visit
