Foremen, leading hand carpenters, project and site engineers and safety officers living in the Central West region are encouraged to apply for a raft of roles on offer due to a new prison being built at Wellington Correctional Centre.
Hansen Yuncken was last month appointed managing contractor to deliver the $150 million innovative new 400-bed rapid-build prison and is now seeking full-time workers for the project.
Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin said the project was a great opportunity for jobs in the Central West.
“The managing contractor is seeking a range of qualified workers, including foremen, project and site engineers, safety officers, leading hand carpenters, and a site secretary,” Mr Severin said.
“All roles are full-time and based in Wellington, which will have a positive impact on the local economy. The contractor has also indicated that they are targeting future project opportunities in the Central West, so there could be ongoing work for the right people.”
The new prison is part of the NSW Government’s $3.8 billion prison expansion program to address the demand for prison beds across the state.
Custodial Corrections staff at Wellington will be the first Australian prison officers to work in the innovative new ‘rapid-build’ prison, which is due to open by the end of next year.
The unique dormitory design was developed by Corrective Services NSW in collaboration with Phillips Smith Conwell Architects to provide the highest level of security and safety in NSW for officers and inmates.
Correctional officers will be able to monitor inmates from first-floor corridors that look down upon the pod areas. The corridors are protected by windows that can be opened to allow any security measures to be implemented.
The raised viewing corridors also allow officers to look into each inmate’s sleeping area and the accommodation units include infra-red cameras for night monitoring.
