Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant today announced additional disaster funding to assist banana growers and shellfish producers who were severely affected by storms and floods in June 2016.

Minister Keenan said assistance is being provided through the Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

“These storms in particular had a significant impact on the banana and shellfish industries,” Mr Keenan said.

“That is why today the Australian and New South Wales governments are announcing recovery grants of up to $10,000 to assist eligible primary producers in these sectors.”

Minister Grant said that banana growers and shellfish producers suffered substantial losses following the June storms and floods and that more assistance was needed to help them recover.

“These recovery grants are in addition to the concessional loans and freight subsidy assistance that has already been made available to primary producers in response to this disaster,” Mr Grant said.

“Our farmers will be able to use the grants for removing debris, salvaging crops and stock, and repairing damage to equipment, which will really help them get back on track in the wake of these devastating storms and floods.”

The recovery grants are available to:

  • eligible primary producers in the banana sector in the five local government areas (LGAs) of Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Nambucca and Tweed; and
  • eligible primary producers in the shellfish sector in the six LGAs of Bega, Byron, Eurobodalla, Nambucca, Shoalhaven and Tweed.
To apply for a recovery grant, primary producers in the eligible local government councils can contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 or visit raa.nsw.gov.au.
