Chief Magistrate Graeme Henson has informed me that State Coroner Les Mabbutt will leave the position on Friday, 14 December at the end of this year’s Law term.
In the relatively short period since Coroner Mabbutt assumed the position in April, he has made a significant contribution to the coronial jurisdiction for which he has my gratitude and that of the people of NSW.
His Honour’s experience as a former Police Prosecutor and indeed as co-ordinating magistrate for Central Local Court (Sydney’s busiest custody court) made him well qualified for the demanding position of State Coroner. He will be missed.
I am grateful that the people of NSW will continue to benefit from Magistrate Mabbutt’s three decades of legal experience when he returns to the bench of the Local Court at the end of January 2019. I wish him well.
I will appoint Deputy State Coroner Teresa O’Sullivan to act as State Coroner until a permanent appointment is made in due course.
