Five inmates have been taken to hospital after a prisoner escort vehicle overturned near Lithgow Correctional Centre this afternoon.
The incident occurred about 2.45pm in the driveway leading to Lithgow Correctional Centre.
Twelve male inmates and two Correctional Officers were on board the vehicle, which was travelling from Bathurst Correctional Centre.
One inmate was trapped inside the vehicle before being freed about 5pm. He was taken to Bathurst Base Hospital in a stable condition.
A second inmate was also taken to Bathurst Base Hospital. Three other inmates were taken to Lithgow Hospital. All have non-life-threatening injuries.
Both Correctional Officers were assessed at the scene. One was taken to hospital by a colleague as a precaution. The remaining inmates were also assessed and returned to Lithgow Correctional Centre.
Police, ambulance, fire and rescue and volunteer rescue personnel attended the scene.
Additional Corrective Services NSW officers including those from the Security Operations Group were deployed to provide security and assistance.
Enquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
