Oliver has been crowned most popular baby boy’s name in NSW for the second year in a row, while Charlotte is the number one name for newborn girls for the second time in three years. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM) has released the top 10 baby names for 2015, with Oliver comfortably beating William to the top spot while Charlotte has narrowly edged out Olivia, which was the most popular girl’s name in 2014.
“Charlotte spiked in popularity following the birth of Princess Charlotte last year and we expect that trend to continue with 2016 being the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Bronte’s birth,” said Amanda Ianna, Registrar of NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages.
Ms Ianna said NSW parents are favouring traditional names that were popular 100 years ago.
“There is a cyclical nature between generations when it comes to name trends with William and Jack experiencing a strong resurgence in recent years after plummeting in popularity in the sixties.” Ms Ianna said.
The new entries to the top 10 NSW baby names list are Isaac and Zoe, which have come at the expense of Lachlan and Ruby. While Ruby topped the list 10 years ago, it’s now fallen to 16th place.
“Names will come in and out of vogue with special events, famous people, and political change,” Ms Ianna said.“Whether the influence comes from a book, movie, a royal event or to commemorate a favourite relative, your child will probably carry their name for life so it’s important to choose wisely.”Parents have 60 days to register their newborn and BDM is still receiving registrations for 2015.
Registration of your child’s birth is free in NSW and helps establish their legal identity in the community. To find out more about NSW birth registration, call 1377 88 or visit: www.bdm.nsw.gov.au. A final list of the top 100 baby names will be published on the website by April 2016.
Figures collated as at 5 January 2016 and subject to change as2015 birth registrations continue to be received and processed.
