Ruff justice: Prison K9 thwarts drug smuggling attempt

Issued: Tuesday, 5 July 2016

A Correctives Services drug-detection dog has proved he's no slouch when it comes to sniffing out smuggled goods after alerting staff to 46.5 grams of contraband on two prison visitors.

Mojo, a 6-year-old English Springer-Spaniel, used his acute sense of smell to prevent illicit drugs and tobacco from being brought in to Goulburn Correctional Centre over the weekend.

Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin praised Mojo for his record haul, and warned visitors trying to smuggle goods into prisons that they would be caught.

"Mojo and other Corrective Services K9s go through 12 weeks of intensive training at the elite Security Operations Group in Windsor, northwest of Sydney," the Commissioner said.

"Our K9 teams include German Shepherds, Labradors, Springer Spaniels and Border Collies that are highly skilled in detecting drugs, mobile phones and other contraband.

"As Mojo's admirable detection skills over the weekend proved, the chance of being caught smuggling contraband into the state's prisons is extremely high.

"The contraband will then be seized, visitors will be charged by police and also lose their visiting privileges."

Mojo first detected illicit drugs at 11.15am on Saturday on a 33-year-old Constitutional Hill woman. The woman was escorted to a search room where she volunteered four balloons containing 7.7 grams of contraband that had been concealed in her clothing.

Police were notified and the woman was issued a court attendance notice.

Mojo's second 'positive indication' was at 12.40pm when he detected 38.8 grams of contraband that a 24-year-old Rutherford woman had hidden in a body cavity. The woman was arrested and taken to Goulburn Police Station where she was charged with two counts of drug supply.
