Artwork produced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates from Long Bay Correctional Complex in Sydney's east will be exhibited this week at Downing Centre as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations.
The collaboration between Long Bay's Boom Gate Gallery and the court complex focuses on the NAIDOC message of 'Because of her, we can!' which celebrates the invaluable contributions that Indigenous women have made, and continue to make, to communities.
Acting Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Luke Grant said the artworks provide inmates with an opportunity to use their time productively, acquire skills and possibly earn a small income.
"Creative pursuits can positively contribute to an inmate's mental health and when it's time for their release, hopefully there will be a more successful reintegration into the community," Mr Grant said.
"We recognise the unique position of Aboriginal people in our culture and history and respectfully observe significant cultural events in our correctional centres, including NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week.
"We are delighted to be a part of this week as it's important to recognise and celebrate the place of Aboriginal peoples."
Deputy Chief Magistrate Jane Mottley and NSW Women of the Year Awards lifetime achievement recipient Aunty Norma Ingram will participate in a special opening ceremony of the exhibition on Friday 6 July. The artwork will be on display for three weeks.
Last year The Boom Gate Gallery marked 25 years of selling works by inmates to the public.
Up to 25 artists are represented at any time, with prices from $25 for individually painted cards; $70 for decorated clap sticks, while paintings start at $50. A percentage from sales is paid to the victims' compensation scheme and then distributed to victims of crime.
