Soldiers’ spirits boosted by prison care parcels

Published date 23 April 2018
Australian Defence Force troops serving overseas will have their spirits boosted this Anzac Day with care packages donated by inmates at Bathurst Correctional Centre.

The inmates are involved in the Defence Community Dogs program, which has trained more than 40 rescue dogs as service animals to assist former soldiers suffering physical and mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

Minister for Corrections David Elliott praised both the staff and inmates for wholly embracing the opportunity to thank those servicemen and women who are serving their country.

“The inmate handlers and the dogs currently being trained will also march in the Bathurst Anzac Day parade, alongside veterans who received a dog from the program last year,” Mr Elliott said.

“The dogs will be wearing purple poppies, which are symbolic of the animal victims of war.”

Corrections Officer Kylie Fogarty, who oversees the program, said the care packages are sent free of charge by Australia Post to an Australian Defence member for Anzac Day.
“The 2kg packages comprise a choice of food, toiletries and magazines,” Ms Fogarty said.

“The inmates generously donated 12kg of items, which they purchased through buy-ups – the prison grocery scheme, and this was enough to make up six packages.”
The Deployed Troop Care Package initiative is run by The Australian Defence Force and Australia Post.
