Mid North Coast prison staff hoping to hit breast cancer for six

Published date: Tuesday 12 February 2019

Mid North Coast Correctional Centre staff will return to the crease for a second year in a row to raise vital funds for breast cancer nurses.

The Corrective Services NSW officers will take on workers from Watpac, the company constructing the prison expansion, in a game of cricket for a Pink Stumps Day next Friday
afternoon (22 February).

Governor Majid Marashian said they’re hoping to go one better this year after raising $700 last year for the McGrath Foundation.

“I’m very proud of the staff for banding together and organising such an event for an important cause,” Mr Marashian said.

“Unfortunately breast cancer has touched some of our colleagues and their families so we want to help in any way we can.”

The afternoon will involve a game of cricket, gold-coin donation lunch, raffle and the auction of a stay at the Amani Farm Bed and Breakfast in Port Macquarie.

Watpac Construction has arranged pink shirts for all players to wear on the day. First Class Correctional Officer Rachael Rudd, who is part of the staff Peer Support team organising the event, said the day was also a reminder for women to get a check-up.

“Doctors found a lump in my breast but luckily for me it wasn’t cancerous so it’s important that women do check for any potential issues,” Ms Rudd said.

“We’re very grateful to all the community and local businesses in Kempsey and Port Macquarie that have jumped on board to donate money and items for the raffle.

“We look forward to a fun afternoon while also making a difference.”Pink Stumps Day will be held at the entrance of the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre in Aldavilla, near the Shine For Kids centre from 2pm and is open to the public.

Money raised will go to the McGrath Foundation, which places breast care nurses in communities across Australia, making a real difference to families experiencing breast
