Corrective Services NSW wishes to respond to concerns raised in The Sunday Telegraph today about reforms to inmate education.
CSNSW is committed to the rehabilitation of all offenders and the provision of education opportunities is vital to that.
Our service delivery model is based on the needs of the centre and the cohort of inmates at the centre. Not all centres have inmates with an assessed literacy or numeracy need. There are some types of centres (e.g. remand) where running courses of that length is not feasible.
Literacy and numeracy completion rates have increased over the past three years, going from 5 per cent in 2016/17 to 20 per cent in 2017/18.
We are on track to meet a completion rate of 40 per cent in 2018/19.
In 2017/18, CSNSW met its target to increase the number of inmates participating in vocational education and training by 20 per cent and is on track to exceed this target in 2018/19.
