A wall of honour

The rain and grey sky added to the sombre mood of the unveiling of a new memorial wall at the Silverwater Women's Correctional Centre.

Chaplains Reverend Rodney Moore and Margaret Wiseman blessed the sacred site and paid tribute to staff from the centre who had passed away. "It's a wonderful thing for centre's to have local memorial walls. It unites us to the family of corrections," Reverend Moore said.

Commissioner Severin who laid a wreath with General Manager Pat Aboud said today's ceremony honoured serving and former CSNSW staff. "We pray for the safety of the men and women who go about their work, which is a demanding job, with minimal fuss," he said. "This is a sombre reminder to never take your job for granted."

Contractors DZT, who work on the complex, donated the materials and built the sandstone wall. The Silverwater Women's Social Club paid for the catering, marque and new flag pole which stands behind the wall.

Pat Aboud said staff will gather around the wall each day for their morning parade. It will also be the backdrop for the Centre's Anzac Day service and the annual CSNSW Remembrance Day ceremonies.
