The opening of the inquest into the Sydney Siege will be televised live from 10am 29 January. This is only a preliminary overview of investigations to date, as well as giving the public an insight into how the inquest will proceed. No witnesses will be called and no further hearing dates will be set until later in the year. This is simply a two hour introduction which will feature a short address by the State Coroner Michael Barnes followed by a one hour speech by counsel assisting Jeremy Gormly SC. It is expected to be finished by midday. The courtroom is closed to the public to allow privacy for the families of the victims. However, proceedings will be broadcast live on television. We will continue to update the community throughout the year as information is made public.
