Corrective Services NSW staff managed to win a few coloured ribbons at the Heavy Horse Field Day last weekend.

The annual event celebrated its 20th anniversary in the grounds of the St Heliers Correctional Centre in Muswellbrook. Channel 7's Better Homes and Gardens filmed the event, which showcased champion Clydesdales including those cared for by CSNSW staff and inmates.

Horse breeder and competitor Senior Assistant Superintendent (SAS) Somone Landry travelled from Sydney to participate. She joined colleagues Overseer Janelle Bowden and Senior Overseer Dale Riley on the field. The overseers liaised with the organisers and prepared the grounds for the event.

Mr Riley has been involved in the event for the past 17 years but did not compete this year. He left that to Ms Bowden and SAS Landry. The dynamic duo competed with local gaol horses Memphis, Hunter and Storm. Six month old Memphis secured fourth place in his category. He's the first foal to arrive at the correctional centre in many years.

Breeder SAS Landry said that earlier in the year, at just eight weeks old, Memphis came first at a similar event in Camden. "He was very popular. Janelle did a great job winning a yellow ribbon with Memphis at Muswellbrook on the weekend," SAS Landry said.

"Hunter and Storm are pure bred Clydesdales based at the gaol. Janelle and Storm came second out of 16 horses, winning a red ribbon in the ridden obstacle course. Hunter and I didn’t win a place but we had a blast competing."

SAS Landry is a Shire Horse Society Australia committee member who also showed two other horses on the day. One came second in the Shire Mare Class while the other was Reserve Champion Shire.
