Call for new Sheriff’s Officers to keep courts safe

Are you looking for a new and dynamic career – then why not become a Sheriff’s Officer?

The Sheriff’s Office has launched a new recruitment campaign and is giving you a chance to join their team at courthouses across NSW with applications open until Sunday, 18 October 2020. 

And the best bit is you don’t need a security background to apply. 

Sheriff of New South Wales Tracey Hall PSM said Sheriff’s Officers come from a range of backgrounds.

“In the last round we had massage therapists, landscape gardeners, truck drivers, carpenters and former employees of Fire and Rescue NSW and the Royal Australian Navy.

“Sheriff’s Officers are often referred to as the unsung heroes of the justice system because we don’t have the same high profile as NSW Police or Correctives Services but that is changing.”

Over the past six months, Acting Chief Superintendent Daniel Gordon has been overseeing the transformation of the Sheriff’s Office recruitment process, including a series of films to give candidates an overview of what the role involves.

“When people think of a Sheriff’s Officer they automatically picture an American Western movie with a bloke on a horse. But we’ve been working hard to change that perception,” Dan says.

“The films are designed to give people a better understanding of what we do and why being a Sheriff’s Officer is a great career option.” 

The new recruits will join a workforce of more than 280 Sheriff’s Officers across NSW who are responsible for court security including scanning people entering courthouses and confiscating weapons and other dangerous items. They also enforce court orders such as seizures and evictions and administer the jury system. 

In addition, Sheriff’s Officers are playing a major role in keeping courthouses COVID-19 safe by taking temperatures, carrying out health checks and working to enforce physical distancing. 

Successful candidates will undergo ten weeks of intensive training which focuses on legislation, communication skills, operating state-of-the-art technology, resolving conflicts without force and defensive tactics. 

Daniel says every day as a Sheriff’s officer is different with new challenges and rewarding experiences. 

“No two days are the same. One minute you could be operating our high-tech scanning machines and the next you could be out in the field in one our marked Sheriff’s Officer’ vehicles,” he explains.

“We are always looking for great people, so if you think you have what it takes we want to see your application.”
